RACE
REPORT: Dunlap TT 20k - Sun. June 8:
Pre-race:
Saturday I was exhausted and not breathing well - again. Very listless. Not nearly enough sleep for this early
4:30 am start, long drive, but hoped for the best, and no carmin/nav issues, at
last! Hopefully I wont feel the
sleep deprivation til I get home!
Arrived early and parked in the shade for a cool-ish trainer warm-up of ~
30 minutes. My goal was to nab
that 3rd spot on the podium, knowing that Mary Ellen Allen and Yvonne Walbroehl
would take the top spots. I
finished my warm-up with 20 minutes on the road and punched a few good jumps
into the wind. This course would
clearly be a challenge, with 15 mph winds, and it looked like a lot of
cross. But I came to the line
feeling like I had a good TT in me.
There were 10 in the 55s, the biggest field this
year.
Race details:
After using inhalers for 2 weeks
in workouts, his is the first race, and they did the job.
I worked hard on steady strong consistent breathing and it paid off. The wind was ferocious- heavy cross and
headwinds, and little tailwind.
The curves and turns mid-course required concentration, and I had to pull
out of the t-bars and slow a bit so I wouldn’t blow over coming into a new wind
force. That’s a drag!! On the bright side - I wore my new PINK
skin suit from Voler - perfect fit and no issues!
It’s perfect and I hope to get my HAMMER logos heat stamped in time for
Nor Cals.
Finish:
I had so hoped for a strong third
- but a brand new 55 year old - Joan Case, finished 1st in 31:14.
MAE - 2nd 20 seconds back, Yvonne 3rd -32:17, and I was 4th in
33:06. My gap to MAE was the usual
minute and a half, and I closed down a tad on my 1 minute gap to Yvonne. But what pleased me was riding 1 minute
slower than at Sattley last summer under today’s ferocious wind!
I felt strong and managed my disc, which a year ago I couldn’t have
done. I also rode with everything,
but didn’t cough (or die) at the line.
I also was mentally strong enough to stay in 4th, as 5th and 6th were
just 15 seconds back.
Was
it fun?
Yes, I love TTs! But darn,
the medals were really unique -looked like a cassette with a cut-out of a rider - next year!
☺
Fueling:
Immediately following the race
- 2 scoops of Recoverite mixed with the remainder of my warm-up bottle, followed
by a banana and oreos and caffeine on the drive home.
HAMMER is great product,
with plenty of personal advice, and scientifically designed fueling for success
in all events endurance J

Heres what I take:

and Tissue Rejuvinator.
Race stats: Flat, lots of turns and curves through
orchard country, open to traffic (but little) and no
shoulder.
